The furrowed brow of the lion reminds me of what I recall as the t'ao t'ieh, the zoomorphic pattern found on Chinese bronzes and other artifacts. A fearsome guardian. Then I think of the similarity to the fronts of cars. I think of the hood creases on cars and wonder if they're not intentional. Most cars now have them, and they're certainly more decorative than functional, but they turn the "face" of the car into a menacing scowl. A fearsome guardian to contend with when you're on the outside, but once your inside, behind the scowl, you're safe, protected by the beast.
