Sound can be distracting, intrusive, surprising, so it lends itself to a kind of presentism when thinking about it, as if when a sound happens it is only happening just now, completely new, borne in this moment. But when one really thinks about it, many sounds are old sounds, sounds we have heard over and over again. The sound of a door closing, a squeaking hinge, a horn, a bell, a familiar voice, footsteps....

The persistence of these sounds in our environment reinforces patterns just as surely as physical landmarks, therefore their existence beckons a similar manner of analysis and contemplation.... and now the cafe is about to close so I have to stop writing....
